About Çamlıyayla
Çamlıyayla is a highland district set high in the Taurus Mountains; it is also known locally by its old name, Namrun. It was separated from Tarsus to become a district. About 85 percent of its land is mountainous and forested. Its economy rests on agriculture and livestock: grapes, cherries, plums and tomatoes are grown, and sheep, goat and cattle breeding, together with local products such as grape molasses, fruit leather (pestil) and walnut sausage, add to income. In summer the district's population rises markedly with highland visitors from Mersin, Adana and Tarsus, and highland tourism is an important source of income.
Namrun Castle, which gives the district its name, stands at the highest point north of the district centre and is said to have been built in 1045 for defence. The Yalamık and Cehennemdere canyons, caves, the Papazın Bahçesi in the Fakılar neighbourhood and Yörük (nomadic) life are counted among the district's main assets; the mountains, forests and canyons suit rafting and trekking. The protected Monumental Juniper (Ana Ardıç), about 1,100 years old, and the wild goat protection area around Cehennemdere are also well-known natural features.
